How we calculate follower growth
We measure the percentage change in audience and project the future scenario by keeping the same observed pace.
Use the Follower Growth CalculatorFormula
growth (%) = ((final − initial) ÷ initial) × 100
average per period = (final − initial) ÷ periods
Variables
- initial
- Followers at the start of the interval.
- final
- Followers at the end of the interval.
- periods
- Number of months or weeks in the interval.
Step-by-step calculation
- We calculate the net gain in followers.
- We convert it into a percentage of the initial base.
- We divide by the number of periods to find the average pace.
Worked example
Inputs
- 10,000 → 13,000 over 6 months
Calculation
gain = 3,000
3,000 ÷ 10,000 = 30%
3,000 ÷ 6 = 500
30% growth and an average of 500 new followers per month.
Common mistakes
- Linearly extrapolating spikes caused by a single viral video.
- Ignoring unfollows, which are already baked into the net number.
Frequently asked questions
Is the projection reliable?
It's just an extrapolation of the current pace; audiences grow in steps, not in a straight line.
